Si tratta di un'opera della maturità di Klimt: le figure sono asciutte, sintetiche ed il decorativismo geometrico si materializza in forme che ricordano sete raffinate e pietre preziose. Sulla grande tela quadrata Klimt spartisce lo spazio in un fondale orizzontale ribassato e luccicante, addossato al buio che si apre al di là di esso, mentre le figure sono strette in un angusto spazio decorativo al centro del quadro. Il tema è una rivisitazione, in chiave simbolica, delle tre fasi della vita femminile: l'infanzia,la maternità e l'inevitabile declino della vecchiaia. Il diverso sentimento della vita è suggerito dalle posizioni assunte dalle figure e dalla scelta di rappresentarle nude su vari livelli di un fondo privo di dati naturalistici. Il pittore ritrae la vecchia di profilo, per evidenziare, attraverso un forte realismo del modellato, la deformazione provocata dal tempo sul corpo. La rinuncia ad aprire gli occhi sulla realtà, l'impotenza di fronte a quello che riserva il futuro si manifesta nel gesto disperato di coprirsi il volto con le mani. La giovane madre invece si offre frontalmente alla visione, in contrasto con l'altra figura: il nudo risulta piatto nel rilievo e luminoso nella colorazione quasi ad evocare una dimensione sacra, una allusione alla maternità della Madonna a cui sembra riferirsi anche il coronamento di fiori collocato sulla testa; un serpente stilizzato, mimetizzato con il drappo trasparente avvolto intorno alle gambe, indica il male sempre in agguato, il pericolo incombente in ogni momento della vita. La bimba, infine, assorbita totalmente nella figura materna, è ritratta di tre quarti con il corpo paffuto e arrotondato, abbandonata in un sonno profondo. Nell'opera il senso dell'allegoria si espande dalla condizione della donna alle fasi della vita, all' inevitabile scorrere del tempo, contro il quale l'unico rimedio è la sacralità della maternità che eterna la vita.
