Le prime lingue di fiamma furono viste a mezzanotte in punto. Mi parvero giochi d'incanti o incredibile prospettiva, perché i rari curiosi decisero che quella pietra non poteva partorire fuoco. Bruciavano i marmi secolari, le vernici, gli specchi, i tappeti, gli avori quasi avessero covato nell'anima, per infinite età, tanto diabolico zolfo. Bruciavano le divise, le cere, i legni dei cassettoni, i drappi, sete e velluti, accartocciandosi in un delirio comandato dal destino, e sempre temuto.
