Si trova pressi di Vipiteno ( Bz) e conta oggi tra i castelli storicamente più importanti e ricchi di valori dell'Alto Adige. Fu menzionato per la prima volta in documenti scritti nel 1100 come feudo dei Conti bavaresi Lechsgmünd, mentre dal 1100 la rocca fu data ai Signori di Stilfes. Nei secoli seguenti, diversi conti e nobili vissero nel castello fino che nel 1405 la proprietà passò alla famiglia dei Signori di Sabiona (Säben). In seguito all'estinzione della famiglia la proprietà passò al Duca Sigismondo, il quale però nel 1470 vendette Castel Tasso all'Ordine Teutonico, al quale è dovuto gran parte dell'aspetto attuale del castello e dell'arredamento. Dal 1813 divenne infine proprietà dei Conti Thurn und Taxis. Dato che il castello non fu mai conquistato o devastato, ancora oggi è ben conservato ed all'interno si trovano moltissimi oggetti e mobili di tempi passati.
