Altezza 30÷150 cm. Le grandi foglie sono alterne, munite di un corto picciolo oblunghe a segmenti acuti le basali; le cauline amplessicauli e cordato-auricolate; tutte con margine sinuato-dentato, galuche e cerose. I boccioli sono penduli e si radrizzano all'antesi. I grandi fiori solitari sbocciano all'apice di lunghi peduncoli fiorali ricoperti di setole cespitose, sono ermafroditi, dotati di un calice costituito da 2 sepali caduchi, la corolla è composta da 4 petali, pieghettati nel bocciolo, di colore bianco, roseo, rosso o malva, con una chiazza brunastra sull'unghia. La corolla cade presto. Si contano numerosi stami a filamenti bianchi, con antere scure; l'ovario subgloboso, policarpellare, sprovvisto di stilo è coperto da un disco stigmatico lobato diviso in 8÷12 lobi. I frutti sono capsule da sferiche a ovate a deiscenza poricida, che contengono numerosi piccoli semi reniformi, con superficie reticolata, biancastri, blu scuri nelle varietà orticole, pieni di sostanze oleose. Sono posti nella parte superiore della capsula fra i lobi dello stimma, quindi solo forti scosse di vento permettono ai semi di raggiungere il terreno. Tutte le parti verdi di P. somniferum, specialmente le capsule immature, sono percorse da un canale lattifero che se tagliato, secerne un liquido bianco e denso che si scurisce e si rapprende all'aria. Antesi: Maggio÷Giugno Habitat: Coltivata per la produzione di oppio nell'Europa sud-orientale, in Asia minore e in Asia sud-orientale, in tutto il mondo in diverse varietà sia come pianta ornamentale che da olio.
