Posta sugli scogli a strapiombo sul mare, la chiesa di San Pietro è sicuramente uno dei luoghi più incantevoli e rappresentativi dell'intera Liguria. Sorta sui resti di un tempio pagano (rinvenuti durante i restauri del secondo dopoguerra) è formata dall'integrazione di edifici di epoca diversa (paleocristiana e medioevale) con all'esterno quadrifora aperta sul mare di epoca posteriore, venne consacrata ufficialmente nel 1198. A destra è visibile la chiesa paleocristiana in marmo nero della vicina isola Palmaria, con l'abside inscritto entro il muro perimetrale e forma un tutt'uno con la chiesa medioevale che fu costruita dai Genovesi in stile gotico con paramento a fasce alternate bianche e nere. Gli archi che mettono in comunicazione le due chiese sono opera del restauro effettuato negli anni 1929-34. Nella parte paleocristiana è ancora visibile parte del pavimento originario a commessi marmorei del VI secolo. L'ingresso della chiesa si trova sul fianco sinistro con portale d'entrata raffigurante figure di santi ed apostoli in bronzo, a destra dell'altare si apre un delizioso terrazzino da cui di gode un magnifico panorama. Il campanile è a pianta quadrata, anch'esso a fasce nere e bianche. Ogni anno decine di coppie provenienti da tutto il mondo decidono di pronunciare il loro sì in questo incantevole luogo.
