Bari war cemetery. Il 3 settembre 1943 l'invasione alleata della penisola italiana ha avuto inizio con lo sbarco nel sud di Reggio e, pochi giorni dopo, nel Golfo di Salerno. L'invasione ha coinciso con un armistizio firmato con gli Italiani, che rientrarono quindi in guerra a fianco degli Alleati. Obiettivi alleati dovevano ritirare le truppe tedesche dal fronte russo e in particolare dalla Francia, dove era prevista un'offensiva per l'anno successivo. Il sito del cimitero di guerra di Bari è stato scelto nel novembre del 1943. Non c'era alcuna seria battaglia nei pressi della città, che è stata la sede del Gruppo Armata durante le prime fasi della campagna italiana, ma ha continuato ad essere una base di approvvigionamento importante e centro ospedaliero, con il 98° Ospedale Generale stazionarono lì da ottobre 1943 fino alla fine della guerra. In tempi diversi, altri sei ospedali generali sono sorti a Trani e Barletta, a circa 48 km. Oltre che presidio ospedaliero e luogo di sepoltura, il cimitero contiene tombe portate da una vasta area di sud-est d'Italia, dal 'tacco' fino allo 'sperone'. Qui sono anche sepolti gli uomini che morirono in due esplosioni disastrose nel porto di Bari, quando navi cariche di munizioni esplosero nel dicembre del 1943 (nel corso di un raid aereo tedesco) e nell'aprile del 1945. Il cimitero di guerra di Bari contiene 2.128 sepolture del Commonwealth della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, 170 dei quali non identificati. Ci sono anche alcune sepolture non di guerra e tombe di guerra di altre nazionalità. Il cimitero contiene anche 85 sepolture della prima guerra mondiale, portate dal Cimitero Comunale di Brindisi nel 1981. La maggior parte di queste sepolture sono di ufficiali e soldati della flotta Adriatico, che aveva stretti contatti con le associazioni di Brindisi durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale.
