Famiglia: Coenagrionidae - Specie: Pyrrhosoma nymphula - Autore: (Sulzer, 1776) - Dimensioni: lunghezza 33-36 mm, apertura alare 38-48 mm. - Descrizione: torace nero con lati gialli e bande antiumerali gialle che diventano rosse negli esemplari maturi. Addome rosso con solamente gli ultimi segmenti in gran parte neri. Nella femmina la colorazione è variabile con porzioni nere sul corpo più o meno espanse. La forma melanica è completamente nera. Pterostigma e zampe neri. Può essere confusa con Ceriagrion tenellum dalla quale differisce per le dimensioni maggiori, le zampe e lo pterostigma neri e non rossi. - Distribuzione e habitat: segnalata in tutte le regioni italiane ad esclusione di Valle d'Aosta, Sardegna e Puglia. Si rinviene presso acque ferme o con lento corso, lungo le rive di fiumi, laghi, fontanili, rogge, torbiere, stagni con abbondante vegetazione. E' specie abbastanza rara ed esigente per quanto riguarda la qualità delle acque. - Periodo di volo: aprile-ottobre.
