L'edificio è il risultato dell'integrazione di due chiese: la prima quattrocentesca in stile gotico, la seconda, della seconda metà del Seicento, è una basilica in forme barocche. A circa metà del 1400 è da far risalire anche la costruzione dell'annesso convento dei frati Serviti, nel refettorio del quale è conservata la famosa grande tela di Paolo Veronese: "La Cena di San Gregorio Magno".
