Once upon a time.... la foto di un martino in cova di Angelo Gandolfi pubblicata sulla rivista Airone colpi' tutti a quel tempo.Gia' Fioratti aveva fotografato l'allocco e l'upupa nel nido, ma il martino era un'altra cosa. Una foto del genere, per l'enorme difficolta' tecnica sembrava irraggiungibile...ma ci son sempre piaciute le sfide e cosi' nel nostro piccolo, provammo anche noi. Ricercammo su libri e riviste di natura (ai tempi internet non esisteva ) tutto cio' che potesse servire per la costruzione di un nido artificiale per martin pescatore: tavole di compensato, chiodi, vinavil, un tubo in plastica per idraulica di un metro, diametro 60mm, sabbia e cartapesta. Si trattava di costruire un scatola con all'interno la camera per la cova di circa 15cm di diametro. La scatola doveva avere un lato asportabile che sarebbe stato sostituito, durante le riprese, da un ulteriore camera oscura nella quale erano posizionati due lampeggiatori, una fotocamera con grandangolare ed una telecamera ad infrarossi. Con la cartapesta costruimmo la camera per la cova e poi la ricoprimmo con uno strato di vinavil sul quale spargemmo della sabbia e piccole radici per far sembrare il nido il piu' naturale possibile. Il tubo invece, anch'esso ricoperto di sabbia doveva simulare il tunnel d'entrata.Il tutto naturalmente doveva essere perfettamente impermeabile alla luce. Il nido venne posizionato dietro una radice di un albero caduto nel quale il martino aveva gia' fatto dei tentativi di costruzione senza successo ed il tubo attraversava il pane di terra che era rimasto attaccato alla radice stessa ed usciva in corrispondenza dei precedenti buchi fatti dal martino. Venne occupato nel giro di una settimana e quando fummo sicuri che i giovani avevano gia' alcuni giorni di vita, iniziammo a fotografare. Seguimmo l'allevamento dei piccoli attraverso un monitor da un capanno mimetico a circa venti metri dal nido mentre lo scatto avveniva attraverso un comando a distanza. Fu senza dubbio un'esperienza fra le piu' complesse della nostra "carriera" fotografica ma anche tra le piu'interessanti e gratificanti che ci permise di osservare comportamenti ed aspetti della vita del martino fino ad allora poco conosciuti.
