Nelle campagne del foggiano, soprattutto ma non solo, si incontrano spesso i poderi O.N.C.. L'Opera Nazionale Combattenti (O.N.C.) era un ente assistenziale fondato durante la prima guerra mondiale ad opera di Francesco Saverio Nitti e Alberto Beneduce. L'ente, costituito nel 1917, nasceva con il motto "terra ai contadini", prima, e "terra ai reduci", poi, con lo scopo di reintegrare al lavoro i reduci di guerra assegnandovi la terra espropriata ai latifondisti assenteisti dell'Italia centro-meridionale. Al reduce di guerra e la sua famiglia veniva assegnata una vera e propria azienda agricola completa, il podere. I poderi, tutti pressoché uguali, erano costituiti da circa 30 ettari di terra, una casa rurale su due piani con una stalla annessa, un silo per la conservazione del foraggio, un forno in muratura, un pozzo e un magazzino. Pare che venissero assegnati anche attrezzi di lavoro e animali. L'ente passò attraverso due riforme del suo statuto, nel 1923 e nel 1926.
