Nome scientifico: Anax imperator (Leach, 1815) Nome comune: Imperatore comune Dimensioni: E' la più grande delle libellule europee, lunghezza: 66-84 mm, apertura alare 90-104 mm Descrizione della specie: I maschi si distinguono per il torace uniformemente verde e l'addome blu con una larga banda nera centrale. Le femmine hanno un addome verde, allo stesso modo marcato, che può diventare blu nella stagione calda Gli occhi sono verdi-blu con al massimo sfumature marroni. Può essere confusa con Anax parthenope e Anax ephippiger ma la "libellula imperatore" non ha mai torace, e primo segmento addominale, marroni o grigiastri ma sempre verdi. Un sottile anello giallo sul secondo segmento addominale è caratteristico negli individui immaturi di A. imperator che sono ancora verdi. L'anello giallo è in realtà tipico degli esemplari maturi di A. parthenope che sono invece in gran parte marroni. A. imperator si distingue anche per il disegno pentagonale nero sulla fronte e, nelle femmine, per l'assenza di tubercoli occipitali. Distribuzione e habitat: specie comune e diffusa in tutta Italia e isole in ambienti differenti presso raccolte d'acqua con abbondante vegetazione ripariale, grandi stagni e laghi, ma si possono trovare sui canali e fiumi in movimento lento Presente anche nelle zone risicole dove però non si riproduce. Periodo di attività: Vola da maggio a ottobre, con il maggior numero di individui tra giugno e agosto.
