Le Meteora si trovano nel nord della Grecia, nella pianura della Tessaglia. È un importante centro della chiesa ortodossa, nonché una rinomata meta turistica, ed è stata dichiarata patrimonio dell'umanità dall'Unesco. Si caratterizza per la presenza di numerose torri naturali di roccia. Su diverse di queste torri si sono insediati dei monasteri (a loro volta detti "meteore"), caratteristici per l'ardita costruzione in cima a pareti a picco. Fino al secolo scorso i monasteri erano raggiungibili solo con scale a pioli o con sistemi a carrucola, ora ci sono scale in muratura o scavate nella roccia la cui salita è impegnativa, ma non molto faticosa, richiedendo di solito circa dieci minuti.
