"Uscir nella brughiera di mattina dove non si vede a un passo, per ritrovar te stesso." così cantava una leggenda della musica italiana degli anni 70. Nel territorio del comune di Lonate Pozzolo, è presente una consistente porzione di questo singolare ambiente, la più estesa e importante della Lombardia. Prende il nome dal brugo, la calluna vulgaris che ricopre vaste aree a bosco rado di betulla, rovere e pino silvestre; dalla cima di un ramo il gheppio osserva, paziente, la mossa fatale dell'ignara lucertola che si muove tra la bassa vegetazione. Il silenzio del mattino è interrotto da un fischio bisillabo, stonato, insistente e monotono. Potrebbe essere un animale strano, oppure un bontempone celato tra i rami rosati che sogghigna prendendosi beffa di noi. Camminiamo silenziosamente tra il brugo fiorito, Il fischio smette, ci fermiamo; poi riprende e noi pure. Sempre più lenti, sempre più cauti. Finchè d'un tratto, dal nostro fianco, con un improvviso fragore di ali si alza pesantemente un piccolo gallinaceo, poi un altro e un altro ancora. Alla fine sono una decina, i Colini della Virginia che ci fanno saltare il cuore in gola! Proviene dall'America settentrionale da introduzioni dall'inizio novecento. Nel Parco del Ticino si è trovato subito a suo agio, tanto che solo in questa terra i massimi studiosi di fauna hanno decretato la sua naturalizzazione dagli anni ottanta. In estrema sintesi è come se gli fosse stata conferita la cittadinanza onoraria.
