Capo Sunio è un promontorio situato sulla punta meridionale dell'Attica in Grecia, a circa 70 km da Atene. Su di esso si trovano, in posizione suggestiva, i resti di un tempio greco dedicato a Poseidone, e di un secondo tempio dedicato ad Atena, di cui sono però conservate solo le fondazioni. Secondo il mito sarebbe il luogo dal quale Egeo, re di Atene, si sarebbe gettato in mare quando vide delle vele nere avvicinarsi ad Atene, nell'errata convinzione che suo figlio Teseo fosse stato ucciso e non le vele bianche come avevano pattuito. Di conseguenza, il mare in cui si gettò divenne noto come Mar Egeo. Il sito era frequentato sin dalla fine dell'VIII secolo a.C., come provano i rinvenimenti archeologici, ed Erodoto ci informa che nel VI secolo a.C. vi si teneva una processione, nella quale i capi ateniesi si recavano al promontorio via mare su una barca sacra. Il tempio è un esastilo dorico periptero, cioè con sei colonne sulla fronte e tredici sui fianchi; le colonne, alte m. 6,10, tali colonne sono più sottili in alto che in basso ( 0,79 cm. In alto, 1 m. in basso ). Questa tecnica permette di accentuare l'effetto di prospettiva e di vedele più alte di quello che in realtà sono. Nell'antichità era costume passare con le navi davanti al promontorio perché era considerato un atto propiziatorio, infatti sulle colonne e sullo stilobate, piedistallo alla base della colonna, possiamo vedere incisi nomi di marinai. Grandioso è il panorama: a sinistra si vedono la vicina isoletta di Makronisos e la più lontana isola di Kea; a destra si estende il golfo di Saronico, e, più lontano, la costa dell'Argolide.
