Note: L'andromeda ha una distribuzione sporadica e localizzata su buona parte dell' arco alpino. Sverna come larva. Le uova sono deposte singolarmente sulle piante nutrici, dei generi Potentilla, Alchemilla, malva. Quando nascono, le larve hanno vita solitaria e si impupano direttamente alla base della pianta nutrice, in bozzoli liberi posti nel terreno fra lo strato erbaceo.
Maschio: ali anteriori di colore bruno scuro con spessa frangiatura marginale a righe bianche e brune. Le anteriori presentano diverse macchie bianche ben sviluppate disposte in maniera caratteristica; le posteriori non presentano macchie, ma aree leggermente sfumate di bianco. Nell'area basale è presente una folta peluria.
Femmina: simile al maschio ma priva di piega costale nelle anteriori.
Rovescio: simile per entrambi i sessi, è bruno - grigiastra con macchie bianche disposte in maniera caratteristica nelle anteriori; bruna con sfumatura grigiastra verso la parte basale nelle posteriori. Carattere distintivo della specie è la presenza in area discale, verso il bordo anale, di una macchia bianca a forma di punto esclamativo. Univoltina.
Distribuzione: Alpi.
Habitat: praterie e pascoli umidi, zone acquitrinose, torbiere del piano montano e cacuminale da 1300 a 3000 metri s.l.m.
Generazioni annuali: una sola con sfarfallamento degli adulti in giugno eluglio.
