Quel che rimane del Tempio dei Castori. Situato vicino alla Basilica Giulia, si possono vedere tre gran- di colonne corinzie sormontate da un architrave: questo è tut- to quello che rimane del Tempio dei Dioscuri detto dai Ro- mani anche Tempio dei Castori. I resti del tempio sono di epoca augustea, ma nel 6 d.C. Tiberio lo fece ricostruire, ulti- mo intervento riconosciuto. La costruzione del tempio fu avviata dal dittatore Aulo Po- stumio Albino, in ricordo dell'apparizione dei Dioscuri (Castore e Polluce) a segnalare la vittoria romana sui Latini nella battaglia del Lago Regillo nel 499 a.C. Il tempio venne inaugurato dal figlio del dittatore, nel frat- tempo deceduto. Venne restaurato per ordine del console Quinto Cecilio Metello Dalmatico nel 117 a.C. e in seguito nel 74 a.C. per ordine del pretore urbano Verre. Al restauro voluto da Metello sono da ricollegare il podio in opera ce- mentizia, mentre i blocchi di tufo protetti da tettoie di epoca moderna sono tutto quello che rimane del podio originale. Il tempio era formato sulla fronte da otto colonne corinzie scanalate di marmo pario e undici colonne sui lati lunghi; vi si poteva accedere tramite due scale laterali che conti- nuavano con una gradinata frontale. All'interno erano te- nute alcune volte delle riunioni del Senato e vi aveva sede l'ufficio per la verifica dei pesi e delle misure; la parte an- tistante al pronao molto probabilmente veniva usata come tribuna oratoria. Sui lati lunghi, il podio del tempio risulta interrotto da una serie di ambienti identificati come gli spazi dei banchieri.
