Vive in colonie numerose ed il nido viene costruito sulla cima degli alberi, preferibilmente ad un'altezza superiore ai 20 mt, solitamente condiviso con uccelli di altre specie. All'inizio della stagione riproduttiva il maschio attira la femmina con parate nuziali fatte alla biforcazione di un ramo che crede sia idoneo per la costruzione del nido. Le esibizioni consistono nell'alzare il collo sopra la schiena arruffando le penne del petto ed emettendo un lamento gutturale, oppure nell'abbassare collo e testa arruffando le penne del capo e battendo sonoramente il becco. E' la femmina che fa il nido intrecciando in modo grossolano rami ed altro materiale vegetale procurato dal maschio. Gli aironi iniziano la costruzione del nido già in febbraio, ogni nido in media contiene 4-5 uova. che vengono deposte in marzo e in primavera dopo la schiusa delle uova inizia lo “svezzamento” dei pulcini. Una volta venuti alla luce, i pulcini dell'Airone cenerino vengono nutriti dalla madre per 50 giorni, ma solo la metà di lor raggiungerà l'età adulta. In Italia è ben diffusa un po' ovunque, nella Rete di riserve del fiume Brenta è abbastanza facile da avvistare nei fossi agricoli di tutta l'asta del brenta, le garzaie si possono trovare nei boschetti ripariali di Fontanazzo o della Palude di Roncegno.
