E' una farfalla di piccole dimensioni, con apertura alare di 26 ? 30 mm, appartenente alla famiglia degli Esperidi. E' una farfalla che ha un'ampia diffusione territoriale, infatti è presente in Europa, Asia e in Nord America ( Arctic Skipper), ma un po' ovunque incontra delle difficoltà dovute alle politiche agricole ed ambientali, tanto che in molti siti, in cui era localmente comune, si è estinta, ad esempio in Inghilterra (ora è praticamente presente solo in Scozia), in Danimarca e ad Est è a rischio in Giappone. In Europa è presente soprattuttto nella zona centrale, anche se a Nord, oltre che come detto in Scozia, è presente anche nella penisola Scandinava. A Sud nella penisola iberica è presente sui Pirenei, in Italia sull'arco alpino ed in Grecia in alcuni siti isolati. In alcuni Paesi si sono attuate e si attuano politiche di conservazione e a volte di reintroduzione. Predilige ambienti aperti, pascoli e prati ai margini dei boschi, ampie radure e zone cespugliose, in cui siano presenti le piante ospiti. La stagione di volo va da maggio a luglio, con una sola generazione annuale.
