Circa 2000 anni fa, da una regione di spazio nei pressi della stella Deneb, partirono dei raggi di luce in direzione della Terra. Ciò che vediamo in questo momento è frutto di un viaggio durato 2000 anni nel vuoto cosmico. In questa regione di cielo, vasta circa 10 volte la grandezza della Luna piena, vi sono stelle giovanissime in formazione. Il dettaglio maggiore lo si nota proprio nel suo grande arco situato nella parte meridionale dove vi è una fucina stellare immersa in banchi gassosi, l'età media di questa stelle si aggira intorno ai 3 milioni di anni con alcune componenti che si avvicinano ai 10 milioni. La struttura chiara sul giallo-arancione sembra un uccello in volo ed è proprio da questa nebulosa che prende il nome l'intera costellazione del Cigno. Si può anche notare la nebulosa oscura che la sovrasta, in essa sono presenti un gran numero di oggetti in formazione, è una vero e proprio incubatore stellare. Questa nebulosa oscura completamente la luce delle stelle situate al di là di essa così come anche tutto il chiarore della Via Lattea. Tra noi e la nebulosa si trova una banda di polvere interstellare che, assorbendo la luce delle stelle, la rende completamente oscura. La nebulosa si trova a coincidere, essendone sovrapposta nel cammino ottico, con l'asse mediano del Braccio di Orione, il braccio galattico in cui è compreso anche il Sole e l'intero sistema solare.
