Montevecchio è una località della Sardegna sud-occidentale, al confine tra i territori di Guspini ed Arbus. Tra la metà dell'Ottocento e la metà del Novecento è stato uno dei più importanti distretti minerari d'Europa e culla dell'industria mineraria italiana. Il toponimo è abituale dei luoghi minerari del continente europeo: la miniera è identificata con il nome di “monte”; Montevecchio significa quindi miniera vecchia. Il giacimento era noto già nella prima metà del Settecento, infatti fu sfruttato da Carlo Mandel, al tempo console di Svezia a Cagliari, e da altri piccoli concessionari, per rimanere poi abbandonato per 50 anni. Nel 1848 l'azionista sardo Giovanni Antonio Sanna ottenne la concessione per la coltivazione dei giacimenti di galena argentifera e blenda, intersecati da quarzo bianco, e fondò la Società della miniera di piombo argentifero detta di Montevecchio; seguirono le coltivazioni nei cantieri di Pozzo Sant'Antonio (allora San Giovanni) e la stazione Sciria. Nel 1874 e 1876 le concessioni delle miniere di Sciria e Piccalina vennero date con regio decreto alla Società La Nouvelle Arborese, per ritornare dieci anni dopo sotto il controllo della Montevecchio. Nel 1933 la Società venne acquistata dalla Montecatini e dalla Monteponi, prendendo il nome di Montevecchio Società Anonima Miniere. Nel 1939 si fuse con le società di San Gavino e Porto Marghera, diventando la Montevecchio S.I.P.Z., Società Italiana del Piombo e dello Zinco. Nel 1961, quest'ultima si unì alla Monteponi determinando la nascita della Monteponi e Montevecchio S.p.A. Nel 1965 acquistò le concessioni Gennamari, Crabulassu e Ingurtosu. Nel 1966 la Montecatini si fuse alla Edison, formando la Montedison e da qui iniziò il declino del settore minero-metallurgico. Negli anni successivi vennero chiusi progressivamente i diversi cantieri fino ad arrivare a una chiusura totale e definitiva nel 1991.
