L'antica chiesa parrocchiale di Sarnico, di fondazione medievale e ristrutturata nei primi decenni del Cinquecento, fu abbattuta nel 1727 per far posto al nuovo edificio, più grande e luminoso, al fine di far fronte alle nuove esigenze di una comunità in costante espansione. L'architetto Luca Lucchini, di origine ticinese ma presto trasferitosi a Bergamo, progettò l'attuale struttura conservando la vecchia facciata, integrata nel nuovo prospetto laterale, e mantenendo il solido basamento del campanile, costruito nel 1592 e sopraelevato nel 1869. Dopo cinque anni la parrocchiale era in uso, anche se spoglia delle decorazioni e priva della facciata, terminata solo nel 1777 su disegno di un ignoto architetto.
