La prima battaglia difensiva - quella di arresto dell'avanzata nemica - si svolse in due fasi: dal 14 al 26 novembre e dall'11 al 21 dicembre 1917. Preceduti da un attacco ch'era stato però contenuto sull'Altopiano di Asiago, gli austro - ungarici, dopo una massiccia e violenta preparazione di artiglieria, il 14 novembre attaccano in forze le nostre nuove linee avanzate, tra Cismon e Piave; la lotta diventa sempre più aspra e accanita ed il nemico fa ricorso a tutti i mezzi di distruzione in suo possesso: dalle granate di grosso calibro, ai lancia fiamme, ai gas asfissianti. Aggredisce da est e da ovest il massiccio del Grappa e ne sgretola le difese avanzate a costo di gravissime perdite. Dal 16 novembre vengono via via coinvolti il M. Tomatico, il M. Roncone e il Prasolan; poi, dal 20 novembre, le quote ed i costoni che convergono a raggiera su Cima Grappa: Col Caprile, M. Pertica, M. Fontanasecca, Col della Beretta, M. Salarolo, M. Spinoncia e M. Tomba. Località tutte di cui si leggerà poi il nome inciso sulle steli che fiancheggiano la Via Eroica del Sacrario. Per più volte il nemico viene respinto, ma ripete gli attacchi accanitamente, con forze sempre maggiori. Il 26 novembre, con un violento combattimento, la brigata "Aosta", reparti del 94° fanteria e del battaglione alpino "Val Brenta" ricacciano da Col Beretta la divisione austro - ungarica "Edelweiss" ed ha termine la prima fase della battaglia di arresto. Essa è stata la più dura e la più importante perché venne sostenuta dai nostri soldati quando non era stata ancora superata la terribile crisi della ritirata. Nonostante l'accanimento degli attacchi, condotti con netta superiorità di forze, il nemico venne fermato dal disperato eroismo dei nostri soldati. Sul Grappa, come sul Piave, il sodato italiano compì prodigi di valore, superiori ad ogni aspettativa e riuscì a bloccare tutti i tenacissimi sforzi austriaci per mettere fuori combattimento l'Italia. Fu solo dopo questa dura prova che, riacquistata la fiducia nelle nostre reali capacità, le truppe Alleate affluite in Italia, il 5 dicembre entrarono in linea da Monfenera a Nervesa con il XXXI C.A. francese ed il XIV C.A. britannico. Riordinate le sue forze, l'11 dicembre il nemico riprende con rinnovato vigore l'offensiva. Riappaiono ancora nel vivo della lotta Col della Beretta, Col dell'Orso, M. Spinoncia, Col Caprile, M. Asolone. Nonostante la nostra strenua resistenza, il nemico riesce a strapparci il Valderoa e l'Asolone, giungendo ad affacciarsi sulla piana di Bassano. Ma gli ulteriori attacchi sono ovunque respinti ed il 21 dicembre il nemico desiste da ogni ulteriore tentativo. La battaglia d'arresto è così vinta.
