Di fronte alla celeberrima Ultima Cena di Leonardo Da Vinci, si trova una Crocifissione, dipinta nel 1495 da Giovanni Donato da Montorfano. Schiere di turisti si recano ogni anno ad ammirare il capolavoro del “mirabile e celeste Leonardo”, come venne definito dal Vasari. I visitatori si accalcano intorno alla balaustra per ammirare ogni singolo dettaglio di quell'affresco tanto famoso, guardano quei colori che paiono scomparire e additano gli apostoli ammirando i diversi moti dell'animo che il Maestro ha catturato. Scaduti i pochi minuti a disposizione il gruppo si reca verso l'uscita lasciandosi sulla sinistra un secondo affresco che pare però invisibile ai loro occhi. La Crocifissione è invece un'opera molto interessate e ricca di storia. L'autore, Giovanni Donato da Montorfano, proviene da una famiglia di pittori; il nonno, Abramo, lavorò per la Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano e seguirono la tradizione anche il padre e il fratello di Giovanni. Attivo in Lombardia, realizzò l'affresco nel refettorio di Santa Maria delle Grazie nel 1495, solo un anno dopo l'inizio dell'Ultima Cena (1494-1498) e posto di fronte a questa. Data e firma dell'autore sono ben visibili su una lapide ai piedi della Maddalena, sotto la croce. La scena occupa l'intera parete ed è ricca di personaggi, sopraelevati dalle altissime croci e contenuti in tre lunette si trovano i condannati. Cristo è al centro circondato da quattro angeli, con i due ladroni ai lati, quello pentito a sinistra, salvato da un angelo che regge tra le mani la sua anima, l'altro, a destra, sormontato da un diavolo dalla pelle scura. In primo piano si incontrano diversi personaggi: a sinistra un gruppo di santi domenicani, seguito dal gruppo delle Pie donne che sostengono Maria; ai due lati della croce due monaci domenicani inginocchiati in preghiera, mentre la Maddalena ne abbraccia i piedi di legno, sulla destra San Giovanni, con il volto dolente inclinato verso il basso, nell'atto di guardare il gruppo di soldati romani accanto a lui che si gioca a dadi le vesti di Gesù; più oltre, all'estrema destra della composizione, un gruppo di sante domenicane. Come sfondo un paesaggio roccioso con al centro la città di Gerusalemme. L'affresco costituisce una delle poche opere certe dell'artista nonché una delle ultime prima della malattia, ciononostante la sua collocazione penalizzante di fronte al capolavoro leonardesco lo ha condannato al dimenticatoio. A testimonianza dell'impari confronto con il pittore fiorentino, una lettera del 1497 scritta da Ludovico il Moro è stata interpretata come un invito a demolire l'opera dell'artista, per sostituirla con un dipinto fatto realizzare a Da Vinci. In realtà la lettera si riferiva più probabilmente alle due zone nella parte inferiore della composizione lasciate vuote dal Montorfano, con tracciate solo sommariamente le figure del duca Ludovico con il figlio Cesare a sinistra, e di Beatrice d'Este con il figlio Massimiliano a destra. È quindi possibile che le istruzioni si riferissero al rifacimento di tali ritratti, realizzati poi dallo stesso Da Vinci con la tecnica “a secco”, la medesima sperimentata con l'Ultima Cena e per questo molto rovinati. Se è quindi innegabile il talento e la peculiarità del grande Leonardo Da Vinci, non bisogna dimenticare che il Montorfano era e rimane un mirabile esempio di quella tradizione pittorica quattrocentesca lombarda, filtrata dagli sviluppi della pittura padovana. Inoltre i due affreschi furono scelti in abbinamento, collocati l'uno dirimpetto all'altro come due sacre rappresentazioni, cosicché i frati domenicani potessero mangiare osservando i gesti di misericordia e di carità operati da Gesù per la redenzione del mondo.
