Il suo aspetto gli serve per sfuggire ai predatori e ama starsene tranquillo fermo sui rami a cibarsi di foglie. Se si sente osservato comincia ad oscillare come se fosse una foglia al vento. Se ciò non bastasse, ancora minacciato, ripiega l'addome dorsalmente e mima lo scorpione nell'atto di pungere. Però non ha nessun pungiglione ed è totalmente innocuo. Se preso in mano, tuttalpiù può emettere uno sgradevole odore e pizzicare le dita del malintenzionato stringendo ripetutamente le zampe spinose. Può avere colorazione variabile, perlopiù su tonalità marrone per imitare le foglie secche, ma se fatto crescere fin dai primi stadi di vita in un ambiente ricco di licheni assumerà il colore di questo substrato, come nella foto che ho postato. La femmina e il maschio sono molto diversi tra loro, esempio di dimorfismo sessuale estremo, tanto che i primi ricercatori hanno faticato non poco a capire che appartenevano alla stessa specie.
Questo è dovuto ad una specializzazione dei ruoli. La femmina, priva di ali, o meglio ridotte a moncherini, deve produrre uova, perciò ha un addome grosso e pesante e rimane ferma appesa ai rami. Il maschio invece deve cercare le femmine per accoppiarsi, quindi ha evoluto una forma stretta e lunga, leggera e atta al volo. |
