Non si fece scrupolo di combattere contro Baldovino,fratello di Goffredo di Buglione,per mantenere a se i feudi conquistati (Cilicia,Adana e altri territori piegati al suo signoraggio) ma la ciliegina sulla torta la mise quando si appropriò del bottino della moschea di Omar. Invano tentò di essere nominato re di Gerusalemme,invece fù fatto principe di Galilea.Gli ultimi anni li passò tra una battaglia e l'altra difendendo con valore le sue conquiste.Nel 1112 morì ad Antiochia.Fin qui,la storia,seppur sintetica.Poi la leggenda.Ferito da una freccia avvelenata, Tancredi d'Altavilla fece voto a Maria SS di Gerusalemme, che semmai sarebbe tornato vivo e sano a Capua,avrebbe costruito una cappella a lei dedicata. Fù accontentato.Tornato in patria,sul colle di Bellona, edificò una cappella a lei dedicata. Attualmente e confidenzialmente chiamata 'o Salemme. Dalla cappella originale, con fondi del clero capuano e probabilmente con quelli dei Principi di Formicola,la piccola cappella divenne convento.
