Orthetrum brunneum (Fonscolombe, 1837) Dimensioni:? 40-50 mm. Apertura alare 65-75 mm. Descrizione della specie: Può essere confuso con O. coerulescens dal quale differisce per l'addome un po' più largo, lo pterostigma più piccolo, marrone chiaro e non giallo e, nei maschi, per la fronte chiara, blu pallido e non marrone-giallo. Sulle ali, sopra la nervatura radiale, c'è una fila di celle doppie mentre in O. coerulescens la fila è composta da celle singole. I maschi maturi di questo Orthetrum hanno il corpo completamente azzurro ma non possiedono la colorazione parzialmente gialla delle nervature radiale e costale che contraddistingue O. nitidinerve. Le femmine presentano una evidente bandeggiatura toracica beige, una sottile linea nera dorsalmente all'addome, affiancata da due macchiette nere su ciascun segmento e l'ottavo segmento addominale con margini laterali arrotondati ed estesi ventralmente. Distribuzione e habitat:? presente in tutta Italia e isole, soprattutto in ambienti con acqua corrente, dal piano fino ai 1000 metri di quota. In Italia mancano segnalazioni solo per la Valle d'Aosta. Periodo di attività: Vola da aprile a settembre ed è più frequente nel mese di luglio Le larve si sviluppano in acque debolmente correnti di fossi, canali e lanche, ma anche in acque ferme di stagni, paludi e laghi, di preferenza con scarsa vegetazione acquatica, dalla pianura a oltre 1000 metri.
