Il nome dell'ordine a cui appartengono questi insetti evoca appunto qualcosa di effimero e passeggero, visto che gli adulti vivono poco più di qualche ora. Le larve di Ephemeroptera però passano un anno e in certe specie anche due nei ruscelli e nei torrenti ad alimentarsi e ad accrescersi. Si nutrono di alghe bentoniche e che crescono sui ciottoli, e sono perfettamente adattate alla vita in mezzo alla corrente impetuosa: il corpo appiattito le fa sfuggire in parte alla forza del corso d'acqua, le tracheobranchie (lamelle visibili ai lati del corpo) consentono loro di respirare l'ossigeno discilto nell'acqua, le zampe permettono di far aderire il corpo ai ciottoli. Oltre ad essere un capolavoro evolutivo sono anche importanti perchè costituiscono il cibo di altri insetti, mammiferi insettivori, merli acquaioli, anfibi.
