Il 30 aprile 1800 gli austriaci posero l'assedio al forte difeso da circa 250 francesi, il conte di Hohenzollern comandante degli assedianti intimò la resa al comandante Bertrand con le seguenti parole: «Vi intimo, Comandante, di rendere all'istante il vostro Forte, altrimenti tutto è pronto ed io vi prendo d'assalto e vi passo a fil di spada.
