A sinistra firmata e datata 1525 nel cartiglio, l'opera è ritenuta uno dei perni per la ricostruzione dell'attività in area piemontese di Pietro Grammorseo, pittore di origine fiamminga insediatosi a Casale. Il dipinto mostra nel paesaggio una cultura di derivazione leonardesca e d?reriana, estremizzata attraverso le indagini psicologiche dei personaggi. La Vergine, quale ?Madonna della Rosa', guarda a san Pietro con distacco, trattenendo a stento il Bambino che invece, attratto dalla grande piaga sanguinante sulla testa del martire, si protrae verso di lui. Il repertorio tratto dai leonardeschi si coniuga con la riflessione sulle opere dei capiscuola piemontesi, da Giovanni Martino Spanzotti a Defendente Ferrari fino a Gaudenzio Ferrari. Il dipinto, di provenienza incerta, fu venduto nel 1909 alla Galleria Sabauda da Enrichetta Magnani Orlandi, figlia del celebre restauratore.
