Nome scientifico: Orthetrum cancellatum (Linnaeus, 1758) Dimensioni: lunghezza: 45-50 mm, apertura alare 70-80 mm. Descrizione della specie: specie di colore bruno-giallo con addome, robusto e appiattito, attraversato da bande nere longitudinali. L'addome, nel maschio maturo, assume colorazione azzurra eccetto i primi due segmenti alla base e all'estremità che sono neri. Le ali sono completamente trasparenti con pterostigma nero. Questa specie è molto simile ad Orthertum albystilum e si distingue principalmente per le appendici anali scure e non bianche e l'addome più robusto e appiattito. Lo pterostigma di questo Orthetrum è nero. I maschi hanno torace verdastro e addome azzurro opaco che nella metà distale diventa gradualmente più scuro e nerastro. Le femmine giovani sono di un bel colore giallastro con bande nere longitudinali e con l'età diventano gradualmente più scure e pruinose. Distribuzione e habitat: Frequenta sia acque stagnanti che debolmente correnti come fiumi, lanche, laghi e paludi, anche con sponde prive di vegetazione. È più abbondante in pianura, specie diffusa in tutta Italia e isole. Periodo di attività: Vola da aprile all'inizio di settembre, ma è più abbondante tra giugno e agosto.
