La Capanna Punta Penia è un rifugio alpino sulla vetta della Marmolada a quota 3343 m, il più alto delle Dolomiti. Esso è stato costruito da una guida alpina di Alba di Canazei alla fine degli anni quaranta riadattando un presidio militare austriaco posto in vetta alla Marmolada, risalente alla prima guerra mondiale e recuperando i materiali portati in quota dai soldati negli anni 1915 ? 1917. A testimonianza della guerra, infatti, sulla linea di cresta nord ovest oltre alla famosa ferrata realizzata dalla guida Vincenzo Fersuoch nel 1903 sono ancora visibili i segni della presenza militare con ripari in gallerie scavate in roccia ed i sostegni con gli isolatori per la linea elettrica che raggiungeva la cima. Negli anni l'edificio è stato successivamente ampliato più volte per adeguarsi alle crescenti esigenze dei turisti che raggiungono la cima sia percorrendo il ghiacciaio che salendo dalla ferrata, fino a raggiungere l'attuale dimensione con un servizio di ristoro stabile con cibi e bevande calde e nove posti letto per il pernottamento. Dal rifugio si può ammirare verso nord la catena delle Alpi fino in Austria, e verso sud la pianura tra Treviso, Padova e Venezia fino al mare. Particolarmente suggestivi sono il tramonto, l'alba e .... il mare di nebbia da cui a volte spuntano solo poche cime tra le più alte.
