Durante la prima notte dell'Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc, siamo stati sotto la pioggia per diverse ore. Nel tragitto in auto da Courmayeur verso Champex (Svizzera) abbiamo deciso di fermarci per un po' a Vallorcine, dove il sentiero passava vicino alla strada. La scena era davvero surreale: centinaia di frontali brillavano nel buio, sotto il diluvio. Ognuna col suo ritmo. Siamo scesi dall'auto per fare qualche foto, usando una giacca come ombrello improvvisato per la reflex. Quasi tutti i corridori ci passavano affianco senza neanche alzare lo sguardo, troppo concentrati nel cercare di lottare contro la fatica, il freddo e la notte che sarebbe stata ancora molto lunga. Di ritorno verso l'auto, abbiamo scorto un'altra lucina, questa volta però era ferma. Ci siamo avvicinati. Era un francese, in pantaloncini e k-way sotto la pioggia, con la temperatura dell'aria a meno di 15 gradi, la cui caviglia si era completamente inchiodata. Partecipava alla gara con percorso ridotto, la CCC, e per lui il traguardo era distante pochi chilometri. Gli abbiamo offerto un passaggio al caldo verso il punto di assistenza più vicino, che lui ha accettato a malincuore. Sapere di essere quasi arrivato, ma allo stesso tempo dover accettare la sconfitta del ritiro a un passo dalla gloria, dev'essere stato un duro colpo. Era la prima volta che partecipava alla gara. Alla base vita di Vallorcine è sceso, ci siamo salutati e, prima che chiudessimo la portiera, ci ha detto una bellissima frase. "Ci vediamo l'anno prossimo".
