Il fondatore di Marina di Pisa è riconosciuto in Gaetano Ceccherini: nel 1869 il Re lo costrinse ad abbandonare i terreni da lui posseduti nella riva nord dell'Arno (che nel frattempo era divenuta Tenuta Reale) ed in cambio gli fornì ampi appezzamenti nella riva sinistra, oltre ad una congrua somma di denaro. In tale area Ceccherini, con l'aiuto del figlio Baldassarre, costruì un attrezzato stabilimento balneare dopo aver acquistato per sé una casa colonica nei pressi del vecchio Fortino della Guardia di Finanza.
