Che fine fanno? Vengono dapprima raggruppate in una specie di serpentone al centro della vasca e poi recuperate da personale del Comune con una specie di pompa che le aspira e accumula in un bidone. Una volta riempito il bidone viene svuolato delle monetine che vengono portate via in dei sacchetti e caricate su un mezzo come una specie di portavalori. La Giunta capitolina ha approvato il rinnovo, per tre anni, del protocollo di intesa tra Roma Capitale e il Vicariato di Roma per l'utilizzo delle monete raccolte nella Fontana di Trevi per la realizzazione di attività benefiche a carattere assistenziale e di utilità sociale. Le monetine, lanciate come rito propiziatorio nelle acque della Fontana di Trevi da parte dei visitatori di ogni nazionalità, sono di proprietà di Roma Capitale e sono state destinate da sempre ad attività benefiche a favore dei cittadini. Il ricavato sarà utilizzato dalla Caritas per opere di natura socio-assistenziali per l'accoglienza, l'inclusione e la salute delle fasce più svantaggiate e fragili della popolazione. Chi deciderà di lanciare una moneta nella fontana di Trevi, oltre ad augurarsi che il proprio desiderio si avveri, avrà anche la certezza di sostenere un progetto sociale".
