Le mele renette sono dimensionalmente più piccole rispetto agli altri tipi di pomi di cui solitamente ci nutriamo e si racconta che siano originarie della Francia dove su antichi manoscritti venivano già menzionate a metà del XVI Secolo come reinette. In Italia vengono coltivate principalmente in alcune zone della Valle d' Aosta, del Piemonte e del Trentino Alto Adige... dove trovano il loro maggiore impiego come ripieno per lo strudel di mele. Di mele renette se ne conoscono più di una decina di varietà in base alla forma, ai colori della buccia ed al sapore… che è spesso leggermente acidulo mentre... se ingerite da crude... si potrà notare che la loro polpa è abbastanza croccante rispetto a quella delle mele tradizionali. Queste visibili nella fotografia le ritrassi nei pressi di uno degli argini del fiume Reno... nella campagna bolognese... dove i loro alberelli... dalla forma vagamente cespugliosa... hanno una crescita spontanea, rara e occasionale. Tali piante sono pure visibili ... e sempre di rado... nei pressi degli argini del torrente Samoggia che... all' altezza di San Matteo della Decima... una frazione di San Giovanni in Persiceto (Bo)... va ad affluire nel Reno dal suo lato sinistro. Queste mele renette cresciute in autonomia sono anche abbastanza difficili da osservare in quanto... come tanti altri frutti boschivi... rappresentano una parte del nutrimento di tanti animaletti selvatici che non vedono l' ora di trovarle al giusto punto di maturazione per poterne poi fare dei prelibati bocconcini.
