"RUSTING AND SWEATING" (Dakha Shipyard, Bangladesh) - All'inizio sono rimasto ad asservarle, seduto in un pontile dal Sadar Ghat, il porto di Dhaka. Ad osservare da lontano quegli enormi cetacei, quelle carcasse arrugginite sdraiate, tra la foschia, sulla riva opposta del fiume Buriganga. Un mattina all'alba, però, la decisione l'ho presa. Non esiste nulla come una dozzina di chai strazuccherati (che mi son costati 6 carie in pochi mesi), quattro chiacchere, risate e strette di mano (obbligatorie). Un paio d'ore e mi trovavo nel labirinto di baracche di Char Kaliganj, slum e sede di uno dei cantieri navali più grandi dell'asia. Ora potevo guardare da vicino quei giganti scheletri sommersi da instancabili lavoratori intenti a smantellarli. Inarrestabili come formiche mentre attaccano una zolletta di zucchero. Piedi immersi nel fango, visi avvolti dai gas delle fiamme ossidriche e mani che da anni, o da sempre forse, sono intrise dal petrolio e dalla ruggine.
