con Canon EF 2.0x II, 1/250 f/7.1, ISO 5000, hand held.

Difficile valorizzare a mano libera le mandibole di larva dell'insetto formicaleone, difficili pure da vedere ad occhio nudo perché mimetiche e di una lunghezza di soli 5-7 mm. Mano libera perché se posizionavo il treppiede l'insetto sentendo anche vibrazioni minime nel terreno scompare totalmente. Dopo la metamorfosi uscirà un insetto a grandi linee simile alla libellula però mi sembra impollinatore e sono sicuro che vola al crepuscolo e di notte. In natura ho la possibilità di osservare questa larva su una piccola superficie di terreno sabbioso che si appoggia al muro del garage di casa ed è protetta dallo spiovente, serve terreno asciutto per questa larva, la quale girando su se stessa appena sotto la superficie del terreno ottiene una piccola buca a forma di cono, per le finiture usa le mandibole che fungono anche da badile. In generale cattura formiche ma da ciò che ho visto tutti gli insetti che sono alla sua portata e che per loro sfortuna scivolano all'interno della buca. Una volta bloccato lo sventurato con le forti mandibole inietta un liquido paralizzante che funge anche da scioglitore dell'organismo che verrà succhiato.
