Nome scientifico: Empusa pennata (Thunberg, 1815) Descrizione della specie: Estremamente mimetica, il dorso dell'empusa pennata appare rugoso e macchiettato, con colori tendenti al bruno-marrone nei giovani, e al verde negli adulti. Con zampe mediane e posteriori lunghissime e sottili, possiede una coppia di zampe captatrici anteriori dotate di una doppia fila di piccolissimi aculei sugli avambracci e di un lungo dito "prensile", con il quale trattiene le prede. Il suo nome deriva dalla caratteristica penna posizionata tra le due antenne, sulla testa di forma triangolare e molto mobile. Segni particolari: nonostante faccia parte dell'ordine delle Mantoidee, e condivida con le sue "colleghe" la fama di killer spietato, a differenza di molte altre mantidi, la femmina di Empusa pennata non ha l'abitudine di divorare il maschio dopo l'accoppiamento. Ha abitudini solitarie, e trascorre molto tempo immobile in attesa di avvistare una preda. Abilissima cacciatrice, preferisce nutrirsi di insetti volanti, non disdegnando, talvolta, piccoli grilli e cavallette. Le sue zampe raptatorie sembrano appositamente disegnate per la cattura al volo, di cui è una vera specialista. L'Empusa pennata riesce a sopravvivere per oltre una settimana senza cibarsi. Dopo l'accoppiamento, al termine del quale non ha l'abitudine di divorare il suo compagno, depone un'ooteca di notevoli dimensioni se rapportate alla sua misura: circa un terzo dell'insetto stesso. L'ooteca è costituita da una sostanza schiumosa all' interno della quale l'animale depone le uova, e che modella prima che disseccandosi, si irrigidisca. Le ooteche si trovano solitamente su pietre di colore chiaro, o su piante robuste, prevalentemente in posizioni nascoste, o comunque di difficile accesso per i predatori. Distribuzione e habitat: Predilige ambienti secchi con vegetazione non molto alta e prevalentemente cespugliosa, con un altitudine massima di 800-1000 metri sul livello del mare. Specie a diffusione mediterranea. In Italia E. pennata è presente in tutte le regioni appenniniche nonché in Sicilia e in Sardegna. Predilige le aree aride e soleggiate con scarsa vegetazione.
