Singapore prende il nome da una leggenda Malese che ha narra di un principe del'lisola di Sumatra che si imbatté a Temasek (l'antico nome della località corrispondente più o meno alla odierna Singapore) in un leone (poiché i leoni in questa zona non sono mai esistiti probabilmente si trattò di una tigre), fatto considerato di tal buon auspicio da spingerlo a fondare Singapura ovvero la città del leone dal sanscrito Singa = leone e Pura = città. Singapore è una repubblica facente parte del Commonwealth formata da un'isola principale completamente urbanizzata e 58 altre piccole isole semideserte o abitate da piccoli villaggi di pescatori, zingari del mare, ecc. L'isola principale è collegata alla Malaysia, alla quale nel passato il piccolo stato ha fatto più volte parte, tramite un ponte stradale di poco più di un chilometro. La posizione geografica, pochi chilometri più a Nord delle equatore, rende la città-stato calda, nuvolosa, afosa e piovosa praticamente quasi tutto l'anno (con un picco di precipitazioni intorno a Novembre-Gennaio) anche se nel mio caso ho avuto la fortunata eccezione di trovare quattro giorni di cielo limpido (ma il clima era comunque molto afoso). Sempre a causa della posizione geografica, in mezzo alle principali rotte mercantili, Singapore fu sempre al centro degli interessi commerciali mondiali e questo favorì uno sviluppo che negli anni sessanta decollò lo Stato verso la modernità. La stabilità politica degli ultimi quarant'anni (purtroppo spesso a discapito della democrazia) cosa non comune in questa parte del mondo, il basso tasso di criminalità e corruzione fecero il resto: oggi è praticamente uno dei paesi più ricchi e alfabetizzati al mondo con poca disoccupazione ed ottima sanità.
