Le fotografie qui visibili furono scattate lunedì 21 marzo 1988… giorno in cui Ayrton Senna da Silva compiva 28 anni. Era il primo giorno del primo turno di prove libere pre Campionato 1988 difatti, come si può notare, la vettura è quella della stagione 1987 e non ha il numero di gara 12 che sarà apposto poi sulla nuova MP 4/4 in concomitanza con il primo Gran Premio della stagione che verrà disputato, domenica 3 aprile, in Brasile sull'Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet… anche chiamato Circuito di Jacarepaguá… che era situato non lontano da Rio de Janeiro e che nel 2008 fu completamente smantellato. Ayrton… proveniente dalla Lotus con cui aveva corso per 3 stagioni… in questo suo primo anno alla McLaren... e alla guida della MP 4/4... partì 13 volte in pole position e vincendo 8 dei 16 Gran Premi in calendario si aggiudicò il suo primo Titolo Mondiale. In quella Stagione compagno di squadra di Ayrton era il francese Alain Prost che gareggiò con il numero 11 e che vincendo 7 Gran Premi a fine Campionato si classificò 2°. Il test driver (collaudatore) della McLaren per quel 1988 era l'italiano Emanuele Pirro. La McLaren MP 4/4 era motorizzata con il propulsore Honda RA16 di 1500 cm3 frazionato in 6 cilindri configurati a V di 80° e dotato di 2 turbocompressori: nella versione corsa tale propulsore sviluppava 600/650 cavalli mentre nella versione da qualifica arrivava a sviluppare fino a 1350 cavalli di potenza massima. Quell' ormai lontano 1988… fu l'ultimo anno dei motori sovralimentati in Formula 1… che ritorneranno poi nel 2014. Ayrton Senna da Silva… spesso definito “Magic”… (Senna è il cognome della mamma Neide Johanna… con origini italiane… mentre da Silva è quello del babbo Milton) era nato il 21 marzo del 1960 a San Paolo in Brasile. All'età di circa 13 anni iniziò a gareggiare con i kart con cui alcuni anni dopo vincerà 2 volte il Campionato Sudamericano e 4 volte il Campionato Brasiliano. A seguire parteciperà poi ai Campionati di Formula Ford 1600 e 2000 in Gran Bretagna dove vincerà 2 Campionati: il Pace British e l'Europeo EFDA (European Formula Drivers' Association). Nel 1983 passerà alla Formula 3… sempre in Inghilterra… mentre nel 1984 farà il suo ingresso in Formula 1: da ricordare che il suo esordio su una vettura di Formula 1 avvenne nel 1983… durante una giornata di prove libere… alla conduzione di una Williams FW08C motorizzata Ford Cosworth DFV V8 di 3000 cm3 messagli a disposizione da Frank Williams. Si laureerà 3 volte Campione del Mondo alla guida di vetture McLaren motorizzate Honda: nel 1988 con la MP 4/4, nel 1990 con la MP 4/5B e nel 1991 con la MP 4/6. Nel 1994 passò alla conduzione di una Williams motorizzata Renault. Domenica 1° maggio 1994 alle 14:17… durante il 7° giro del Gran Premio di San Marino sul Circuito Enzo e Dino Ferrari ad Imola (Bo)… un guasto meccanico portò la Williams-Renault FW 16 n. 2 ad una brutta uscita di pista alla curva del Tamburello… e come conseguenza Ayrton Senna terminerà tragicamente la sua carriera agonistica… e di lì a poco pure la sua vita terrena. In seguito le spoglie del Grande Campione… che avevano riposato a fianco di quelle dell'altro sfortunato pilota, l'austriaco Roland Ratzenberger, che era deceduto a bordo di una Simtek S941 motorizzata Ford Cosworth HBD6 durante le prove di qualificazione del precedente sabato 30 aprile… partirono da Bologna… a sorpresa… su un' aereo McDonnell Douglas DC9-32 della nostra Aeronautica Militare messo a disposizione dall'allora presidente della nostra Repubblica Italiana Oscar Luigi Scalfaro… una persona estremamente riservata ma che evidentemente nutriva molta stima per Ayrton… e una volta arrivato a Parigi il feretro fu trasferito su un'altro aereo appartenente alla compagnia aerea brasiliana Varig dove erano state tolte alcune file di sedili così che il corpo che aveva contenuto la vita di "Magic" qui sulla Terra non viaggiò nella stiva come voleva la prassi ma compì il volo verso casa attorniato dall'affetto dei passeggeri. Durante le sue esequie, in Brasile, vennero proclamati tre giorni di lutto nazionale. L'aereo McDonnell Douglas DC9-32… che allora era in servizio presso la nostra Aeronautica Militare… e che trasportò le spoglie di Ayrton… è visibile presso il Parco e Museo del Volo Volandia sito a Somma Lombardo (Va) nei pressi dell'Aeroporto Internazionale di Milano-Malpensa. Le immagini qui visibili sono state scannerizzate dall'analogica pellicola Kodacolor 100 ASA. La vettura McLaren MP 4/3 fu fotografata con una fotocamera Canon T 90 dotata di ottica Canon FD 500 f 4,5 L e il tempo di scatto probabile fu di 1/250 di secondo mentre per il ritratto fu utilizzato un'obiettivo zoom a doppia ghiera Canon FD 80-200 f 4.
