Il Wadi Rum è il grande e meraviglioso deserto della Giordania e viene chiamato anche “la Valle della Luna”. E' formato principalmente da distese di sabbia rossastra, a cui si alternano colline d'arenaria, granito e basalto e per questo motivo ricorda la superficie della luna. E' un paesaggio che alterna forme tondeggianti e picchi scoscesi, fino a blocchi enormi che sembrano colate di cera fusa e poi canyon, dirupi e archi di roccia che la natura ha scolpito a cavallo delle gole. Grazie alla bellezza di questi paesaggi, il Wadi Rum è diventato un luogo famoso. Deserto atipico, privo di grandi dune ma animato da formazioni rocciose di varia grandezza, il Wadi Rum è stato reso famoso da Lawrence d'Arabia, che visse in questo deserto tra il 1916 e il 1918 durante la grande rivolta araba e usato per ambientare molti film di fantascienza e avventura nello spazio. (Lawrence d'Arabia, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Prometheus e Transformer …) Il Wadi Rum è area protetta dal 1998 e patrimonio dell'umanità Unesco dal 2011.
