Il regio sommergibile “Sebastiano Veniero”, classe Barbarigo, era sato varato nel 1919 subito dopo la fine della prima guerra mondiale armato oltre ai siluri con due cannoni da 100 mm a poppa e a prua, divenne operativo nel 1921. Il 24 agosto del 1925 partì da Porto Ferraio con a ordo 48 uomini di equipaggio al comando del capitano di fregata Paolo Vandone per prendere parte ad una esercitazione disponendosi in agguato nelle acque tra Capo Murro di Porco (Siracusa) e Capo Passero, per sorprendere altre navi che partecipavano alla stessa esercitazione. Purtroppo la mattina del 26 agosto il sommergibile entrò in collisione con il piroscafo Capena della società di navigazione Roma. L'equipaggio del piroscafo segnalò soltanto di aver urtato qualcosa di duro a pelo d'acqua e continuò normalmente la sua navigazione. IL sommergibile si inabissò con tutto il suo equipaggio che giace su un fondo fangoso a 55 metri di profondità sbandato leggermente a sinistra. La nostra ultima visita al relitto risale all'agosto del 2006 quando ho scattato queste foto con valore solo documentaristico.
