La Maserati 200 S è una vetture di tipo Barchetta... cioè senza essere provvista di alcun tipo di protezione superiore per l'equipaggio e non aveva portiere. Venne costruita in 28 esemplari tra il 1955 ed il 1957 su progetto di Giulio Alfieri: nel 1957 vennero apportate alcune modifiche alla meccanica e la denominazione da 200 S divenne 200 SI (Sport Internazionale). Era equipaggiata con un motore dotato di 4 cilindri in linea di 1994 cm3 che erogava 187 cavalli di potenza. Un solo telaio... di tipo tubolare... venne costruito dalla Gilco di Milano. Tutte le carrozzerie vennero approntate a Modena... prima da Celestino Fiandri... e poi da Medardo Fantuzzi: alcune vetture... in seguito... verranno modificate e dotate di portiere, tergicristallo per il lato pilota e capote ripiegabile. La vettura qui visibile in origine aveva la carrozzeria verniciata di colore rosso ed era stata portata in gara anche dal bolognese Cesare Perdisa poi... nel 1957 varcò l'Oceano Atlantico... dopo essere stata acquistata dal conduttore statunitense Lance Reventlow... amico dell attore prematuramente scomparso James Dean... che la utilizzò per gareggiare in California, in Florida e pure alle Bahamas. La carrozzeria venne riverniciata di un colore bianco avorio sul quale vennero dipinte longitudinalmente un paio di lunghe strisce dorate come abbellimento e segno distintivo. Alcuni anni fa... a seguito di un nuovo cambio di proprietà... la vettura è rientrata in Europa dove ha beneficiato di un lungo ed attento restauro atto anche a mantenere la colorazione assunta per gareggiare negli Stati Uniti. Sebbene la 200 S non sia una delle Maserati più vincenti... nelle tante competizioni a cui aveva partecipato... la sua attuale valutazione nel mercato collezionistico varia fra i 4 ed i 4,5 milioni di euro... e questo è sicuramente dovuto anche al fatto che gli esemplari ancora esistenti sono veramente pochi.
