La bassa pianura vercellese non è perfettamente pianeggiante. Digrada lentamente da nord-ovest verso est, sud-est. Si va dai 160 metri sul livello del mare nei pressi di Crescentino e poi, poco più a est del canale Cavour, ai 150 metri nei pressi di Lucedio e Lachelle; ai 140 di Tricerro; ai 130 di Trino, Costanzana e la stessa Vercelli. Fino ai 120 metri di Stroppiana e Caresana e ai 110-100 della confluenza Sesia-Po. Tutto l'intricato sistema di canalizzazione vercellese ha sfruttato opportunamente queste lievi pendenze e le risaie hanno fatto altrettanto.
