La Mercedes Benz 300 SLR (Sport Leicht-Renner… Sport Light-Racing) fu costruita solo nel 1955 in 9 esemplari di cui 2 in versione coupè… con le portiere apribili verso l'alto come nella 300 SL “Gullwing” (ali di gabbiano)… mentre le altre vetture erano aperte… tipo barchetta… come questa nella fotografia. Dotata di un motore con 8 cilindri in linea di 2982 cm3 che sviluppava 318 cavalli poteva raggiungere una velocità di circa 290 chilometri orari: tale propulsore era derivato da quello utilizzato in Formula 1 sulla vettura siglata W196. Se la potenza erogata era notevole… altrettanto non si poteva dire dell'impianto frenante dotato di freni a tamburo così… per sopperire a questa mancanza… su alcune di queste vetture venne istallato un innovativo dispositivo definito "freno ad aria" dove tramite una leva il pilota poteva far sollevare verticalmente una parte del cofano posteriore che fungendo così da paracadute aiutava a ridurre la velocità della vettura quando l'impianto frenante dava segni di cedimento per surriscaldamento. Tramite poi una serie di 4 pulsanti presenti sul cruscotto si poteva far defluire qualche goccia di olio sui freni a tamburo quando da surriscaldati tendevano a bloccarsi. La vettura visibile in questa fotografia partecipò alla 1000 Miglia partita nella notte di sabato 30 aprile 1955 con il numero 658… ancora visibile sulla carrozzeria… ed arrivò 2° assoluta con alla guida "El Chueco"... il grande Juan Manuel Fangio... e per questo motivo sul poggiatesta si vede ancora la riproduzione di una bandierina della Repubblica Argentina. Alla guida della vettura… in questo scatto che fu effettuato sotto un piccolo ed insistente diluvio… si vede Jochen Mass (Germania 1946)… un ex pilota che gareggiò anche in Formula 1 dal 1973 al 1982 per un totale di 104 Gran Premi (non partecipò al Campionato del 1981). Nel 1989... alla guida di una Sauber C9 motorizzata Mercedes Benz … insieme al tedesco Manuel Reuter e allo svedese Stanley Dickens... si aggiudicarono la prestigiosa 24 Ore di Le Mans... toccando in prova la velocità di 400 chilometri orari.
