Ne approfitto per scrivere due parole sulle grotte di ghiaccio in Islanda visto anche una domanda da parte di Yellowstone77 sulla sicurezza.
Premetto che fino all'arrivo del virus ho lavorato come guida sui ghiacciai islandesi per una delle più grandi compagnie d'Islanda.
Ho svolto attività di ricerca di nuove grotte e fatto la verifica della sicurezza di alcune di esse. Ho anche partecipato a missioni di ricerca con piccoli aerei ed elicotteri in grado di atterrare su bordo del ghiacciaio.
In base alla mia esperienza posso dire che la valutazione della sicurezza di una grotta viene fatta analizzando una serie di parametri sulla grotta in se e sull'ambiente circostante.
Ci sono alcune strutture che, per quanto molto belle, sono in effetti veramente insicure.
Altre invece (come quella in questa immagine) sono stabili e ritenute sicure.
Le grotte di ghiaccio sono strutture in rapido cambiamento, una giornata invernale insolitamente calda con tanta pioggia (cosa ultimamente non rara in Islanda purtroppo) può impattare in modo deciso la sicurezza di una grotta.
A volte le criticità sono relative ad alcune aree della grotta (ad esempio massi incastonati nel ghiaccio che sono pronti a precipitare) oppure nei dintorni della stessa.
Le grotte vengono in genere controllate la mattina presto prima di iniziare a portare i tour, a volte si devono eseguire interventi per ridurre i rischi.
Le guide poi conoscono la struttura e sanno gestire le criticità. In effetti ad oggi, nonostante l'enorme quantità di persone portate in grotte di ghiaccio in Islanda, non ci sono stati incidenti seri in tour guidati.
Per questo è estremamente importante affidarsi sempre a delle guide esperte se si vuole provare l'esperienza straordinaria di visitare una di queste formazione glaciali. |
