Firenze, Piazza della Signoria ... marzo 2020 ... Nel solco della tradizione popolare che accomunava gran parte delle città medioevali dell'Italia centrale e settentrionale, anche la Repubblica Fiorentina esibiva nei suoi stemmi il suo animale totemico: è il Marzocco, leone rampante simbolo del potere popolare e rappresentato con le "armi fiorentine", ovvero il giglio rosso in campo bianco. In piazza della Signoria, fieramente esposto sopra un basamento marmoreo, si può ammirare la più celebre scultura di detto soggetto, capolavoro di Donatello. Quello che si vede nell'immagine è invece il leone di sinistra posto a guardia e protezione della Loggia dei Lanzi, opera seicentesca di Flaminio Vacca, e che unisce i suoi "benefici" influssi a quelli del leone di destra, opera questa di epoca romana. Era così forte l'identificazione del popolo con lo stemma e col suo animale simbolico, che riuscire ad esibirlo non solo in fattezze statuarie ma anche in carne ed ossa costituiva motivo di orgoglio e potenza! Semplice a dirsi ed a farsi per il cavallo rampante aretino o per la lupa senese ... ma per Firenze la cosa era ben più complicata ... Eppure per tutto il Trecento, o almeno fino all'arrivo della peste nera, accanto a Palazzo Vecchio, sul lato di via della Ninna, la Signoria manteneva un vero e proprio serraglio di leoni, con una trentina di esemplari! ...
