Vuole la tradizione che agli albori del cristianesimo i fratelli Giulio e Giuliano, provenienti dalla lontana isola greca di Egina, giungessero sulle rive del Cusio per diffondere il nuovo credo tra gli abitanti del luogo, gli Usii. Un giorno, camminando in vicinanza del lago Giulio scorse una piccola isola abitata da draghi e serpenti in quantità. Non disponendo di alcuna imbarcazione distese il suo mantello sulle acque e camminando sopra di esso raggiunse l'isolotto dove sconfisse le creature malvagie e costruì la solenne Basilica ove ancora oggi riposano le sue spoglie mortali ...
