Greta Garbo (nome d'arte di Greta Lovisa Gustaffson), gelida, riservata, misteriosa, la più grande diva degli anni trenta, fu soprannominata la Divina: nasce il 18 settembre 1905 a Stoccolma, figlia di un netturbino e di una donna di servizio e, appena quattordicenne, rimane orfana del padre. Abbandona, quindi, la scuola e inizia a lavorare prima presso la bottega di un barbiere e poi come commessa nei Magazzini PUB di Stoccolma dove spesso viene utilizzata anche come modella. Dopo piccole apparizioni in filmati pubblicitari riesce a studiare recitazione presso la "Scuola del Teatro Reale" di Stoccolma, e a diciotto anni ottiene il suo primo ruolo da protagonista in "La leggenda di Gosta Berling" (1924). Con i film successivi Greta Garbo diventa sempre più famosa e imitata, sia per il suo stile e per le sue indiscusse doti interpretative, sia per la sua ambiguità e per il suo fascino misterioso, di cui tanto si parlava all'epoca e di cui tanto si scrive ancora oggi. Alti e bassi si alternano a lungo nella storia di donna e d'attrice di Greta Garbo. Mentre si trova a New York (nel 1950 acquisisce la cittadinanza americana) scrive spesso agli amici svedesi di sentirsi sola e infastidita dal clamore della celebrità, dalle incursioni di giornalisti e fotografi nella sua vita privata. Dopo la delusione per l'inatteso e clamoroso insuccesso del film "Non tradirmi con me" (1941), a soli 36 anni, la Divina decide di ritirarsi definitivamente dalle scene e, per il resto della sua esistenza, continua a sfuggire la mondanità e la notorietà. Dal momento del suo ritiro, fino alla morte (New York, 15/04/1990), l'attrice conduce una vita assolutamente riservata, cercando il più possibile di evitare giornalisti e fotoreporter, restando affiancata solo dalla nipote e dai parenti più stretti. Greta Garbo riposa nel cimitero di Skogskirkogarden a Stoccolma.
