Stamattina gironzolando da Casorate Primo ad Abbiategrasso, m'è venuta voglia di vedere se era tornata l'acqua nel Naviglio di Gaggiano (fino a pochi giorni fa, era in secca) e, come per incanto, riecco l'immagine che non manca mai di affascinarmi e, non chiedetemi il motivo, perché non lo so. Meglio, dare qualche notizia storica che, certamente vi soddisferà maggiormente, mi auguro insieme alla foto. Gaggiano deve la sua importanza al Naviglio, che favorì fin dal Medioevo i trasporti verso la città e, grazie all'apertura di numerose bocche che distribuiscono le sue acque, favorì lo sviluppo dell'agricoltura e la creazione di insediamenti agricoli. Le sue origini sono molto antiche, al pari del suo toponimo, fatto derivare da alcuni dal termine longobardo “Gehage”, che avrebbe il significato di 'bosco regio cintato', e da altri dal latino GAIANUM, aggettivo collegabile a qualche possidente romano vissuto in epoca imperiale. A Gaggiano, lungo il percorso del canale, sono inoltre stati attivi fino all'Ottocento una fornace e una lavanderia (in località Carbonizza), l'attracco del battello che faceva servizio di trasporto per merci e passeggeri (“el barchett”) fra Boffalora e Milano, oltre a numerosi lavatoi, a testimonianza della sua influenza nella vita quotidiana del paese. I tre edifici di più antica data e di maggiore interesse si affacciano sul Naviglio Grande: in riva destra, il Palazzo Venini-Uboldi costruito nel 1711; in riva sinistra il Santuario di S. Invenzio, e il cinquecentesco Palazzo Stampa-Aloardi, detto Palazzo Marino (visibile nella foto), per il suo legame con la leggenda che l'attribuisce a Tomaso Marino. Gaggiano è stato a lungo luogo di sosta per i viaggiatori, i barcaioli, i carrettieri grazie alle locande, caffetterie, botteghe e laboratori artigiani; al centro di un'area agricola efficacemente coltivata da oltre trenta “cascine”. Le trasformazioni intervenute nel Novecento non ne hanno intaccato l'immagine tradizionale delle due file di case lungo il Naviglio, con i due ponti ottocenteschi e la torretta merlata che ospitò gli ultimi gendarmi austriaci.
